Info
ACKspace is a hackerspace in the south of Netherlands in the City of Heerlen within Limburg.
A large number of people still think hackers are criminals which break into computers and steal information. We are here to show them the true meaning of hacking.
We are amongst one on the many space in the world fulfilling a need for the technical, creative and social minded to have a place where they can come together and share their knowledge.
Our memberbase ranges from all ages, cultures and technical backgrounds. Although we are usually good with computers, we are not your PC helpdesk.
ACKspace was founded in december 2010 by PsychiC, Vicarious and LuckY. These three form the board trying to keep the space running smoothly.
We strongly encourage our members to contribute with ideas, workshops and projects. Together we are creating the place to be for all sorts of hackers out there.
March 2011 we got a physical space in the former CBS building in Heerlen (XCBS), where we are currently located.
Because we share the building with other users we are limited to the hours the overall building is open. These hours are located on the main page along with a button showing our actual status. Usually we are open every evening and in the weekends, but when in doubt contact us.
Although we are located in the Netherlands we welcome guests from all over and we are happy to welcome new members joining each month.

Imagining the perfect place
A HackerSpace should be spacious with preferably a few smaller rooms to have different projects in. The Kitchen is nearly a must but it should be a bit shielded from any other rooms to avoid any smells. A Bathroom is an interesting feat. The Living Room Spacious enough to have a couch and big table A good public transport link is a must too
The perfect place would have:
- A low rent ✓
- Heating ✓
- Natural light / windows to open ✓
- Kitchen ✓
- Side note: we have a small bar in our space. The building has a small shared kitchen in room L014 which needs some more equipment. There's also a huge cantina on the other side of the building, not sure if we can use it, we'll have to ask..
- Toilet(s) ✓
- Shower ✗
- Parking or at least the possibility to access it with a truck to (un)load stuff ✓
- A bus stop or railway station not too far away and available till late ✓
- Separate entry (not shared with the rest of the tenants) so that we can install our own access system ✗
- The building has one shared entrance, the reception is always staffed by at least one person
- No (or deaf) neighbours ✓
- Easy to reach ✓
- Our location has free parking and is wheelchair accessible
- Some storage rooms (basement/cellar) for server ✓
- Broadband Internet access ✓
- Possibility to install machinery / tools for making things ✓
- Exhibition area ✓
- Conference/presentation area ✓
- We can either use our own space or rent a large presentation area in the building for a day
- Small room without windows/light (for photography stuff) ✗
- Access to Food (either Restaurants or Markets) ✓
